Therapists for college students near Durham, NC
Our experiences in this world, often based on identities or trauma, can leave us feeling stressed and uncertain. It's confusing to have your worries get in the way of making the connections with people that you long for; or to be so convinced you will fail that it's hard to take the first step in doing the next thing you want to do; or to be suddenly totally overwhelmed in the middle of this exciting new experience you'd been waiting for. Sometimes people need some help slowing down, reconnecting with themselves, and finding new ways to respond so that they can move forward with hope, self-compassion, and empowerment. I have spent many years working in college mental health, helping students from all identities and backgrounds navigate the growth and challenge of the college experience. My approach is collaborative. Together we figure out what's getting in the way for you. I'll be with you in the hard moments, naming and exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences so that you can find ways to respond to them that are helpful. Increased connection with your body is key. Let's also celebrate the wins, big and small, along the way. Finding a therapist that is a good fit is so important—if you're not comfortable enough to tell your therapist what's really going on, therapy won't work. Let's find a time to connect to see if I would be a good fit for you in your next step.
My goal is to create a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients are able to explore issues and improve the quality of their lives. I use an integrative style of psychotherapy that pulls from many different approaches with an emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. My work with clients is based on a collaborative approach that promotes a strong alliance and allows for open and honest communication. Within this foundation, clients develop the safety and freedom to challenge behaviors and beliefs and discover new attitudes that promote change.
Cummings Brandenburg Counseling PLLC specializes in providing high-quality, identify-affirming counseling services to adults 18+ years. In addition to my NC license, I have an Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) with The Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT), which allows me to provide tele-therapy to clients in over 40 states. I have several years of experience working in university counseling center settings, including at UNC Charlotte, Davidson College, and the University of Miami. I pride myself on the passion with which I approach counseling and mental health. Having a strong social justice orientation, I am part of the Brave Step provider alliance and Psychology for All, which help reduce the barriers to seeking services. I work to individualize my approach based on client needs and put a lot of effort into building a trusting, safe connection. As a first-generation college student and cycle-breaker myself, I truly understand the struggles of adjusting to college life without much support. I am here to help people better understand themselves and build greater awareness about their relationship patterns and behaviors so as to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Freedom from emotional hijack is found in noticing, naming, and knowing. This can be the gift of psychotherapy. Congratulations on looking for a therapist and trying to figure out what will be best for you! It can seem like it requires endurance, when all you’re trying to do is get your mental health needs met. The good news is there are lots and lots of great therapy practices! And a practice or a therapist that’s a great fit for one person, doesn’t mean that it is for you! All that matters is what works for you. Whether you feel nervous, doubtful, unsure, excited, and/or anything else, let’s chat, when/if you’re ready. Just because we talk, doesn’t mean you have to start therapy!

"The world breaks everyone, but some are strong at the broken places." -Ernest Hemingway. We all encounter challenges from time to time that seem to break us but with support we can strengthen the broken places to become whole again. If you are facing challenges in life with PTSD, depression, anxiety, relationship challenges or parenting needs I will help come alongside you to find the strength to heal and become whole again. I work with individuals of all ages (0-adult) as well as families. I take a holistic client centered approach to therapy. I have a passion for working with clients who are struggling with trauma, depression and relationship/family stress. I have learned over the years that having many tools to offer clients is very important as each individual has unique needs. I devote myself to ensuring that we find the right tool to aid you in your specific path to healing. Therapy is a gift you give to yourself. I believe that you as the client possess the wisdom needed to heal. It is my mission to help you find this wisdom within yourself and walk the journey of discovery with you. I look forward to connecting with you and joining you on your path to healing and wholeness.
My experience is primarily with Gen-Z and Millennials wanting to address anxiety, depression, relational concerns (communication, boundary setting, self-awareness, etc), religious trauma, and life transitions. Some niche areas include: Christians who don't want Christian therapy, exhausted performers / resentful people-pleasers, anxious change-resisters who struggle when newness comes, and those who want to grow in boundary setting and their sense of self. I'm a huge advocate for narrative therapy. Story-telling is healing and gives context for how we became who we are today. As we understand our stories and the labels we've acquired throughout our lives, we gain self-compassion and the ability to more effectively navigate our present-day lives. Please reach out to set up a consult call to see if the therapy vibes are there. If you'd rather text, my text-only number is: (704) 762-1162.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I have over 10 years of experience using prazosin and doxazosin to treat PTSD related nightmares and flashbacks. I focus on treating flashbacks and nightmares with prazosin and doxazosin. I can work along with primary care doctors or psychiatric providers if they don't have the level of comfort with these medications. For more information visit my site: www.ptsdrx.org. You may have found your way here because you want support with anxious thoughts, low self-worth, nightmares, confusing and intense emotional reactions, or healing from difficult experiences in childhood. I believe that every part of ourselves and every emotion has a purpose, often trying to protect us, even if the outcomes aren’t always ideal. I've seen how powerful this work can be, and I'd love to partner with you on this journey. Building the right connection matters, so let's start with a conversation to see if we're a good fit!
