Therapy approach A relationship between you and your therapist is a primary ingredient fostering meaningful change and personal growth. My approach is warm, open, and empathic. I listen deeply and engage actively as is helpful. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe to be your authentic self, free from judgment. You decide whether this is a comfortable setting for you to grow. I am a psychotherapist (LCSW) with a PhD and advanced training from a four-year psychotherapy institute. While I have had the privilege of working with individuals across the lifespan, a majority of my clients have been college age through young career adults. They come from diverse cultural, gender, ethnic, religious, and spiritual backgrounds. I have supported them through challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, often related to issues of this age group: life transitions, family issues, career decisions, dating, parenting, identity, and loss. I draw from a psychodynamic perspective to understand your unique story, while incorporating therapeutic approaches that seem to us to be most helpful for you. Therapy focus I see therapy as a journey we take together. You bring your unique situation and goals. I provide travel skills based on having taken journeys with others. I have never, however, been to your desired destination. You determine the direction and duration of therapy; only you can decide what to focus on and when you feel ready to move forward. While present-day concerns may be paramount, exploring your past can provide valuable insight into your current situation. I interact with you to ensure I understand what you are saying and to help you more fully express your thoughts and feelings. I use a variety of techniques to assist in therapy including role play, homework, journaling, naming aspects of the self, labeling thoughts that are helpful or not to increase your skills in desired areas and decrease those that prevent progress to your goal. All feelings including tears, anger, joy, and laughter can be part of our work together. Communication style I like a relaxed atmosphere that allows us to communicate easily. I am curious. I like to listen. I like to smile but I am also serious. I reflect back to you what I think you are telling me, ask some questions to ensure that I more fully understand what you are saying, encourage you to delve deeper, and wonder with you about when your goals and your actions do not seem aligned. I get to know you not only by what you say but by feelings that may emanate from you. I am comfortable with a broad range of feelings. I support strength and empowerment. I encourage you to let me know what interaction with me is helpful to you and what is not helpful. My goal is to offer a compassionate, thoughtful space where you feel heard and supported. Therapy Goals My goal for you is that you can live fully in the present, understand aspects of your past as they impact the present, and move forward on a path that is best for you. You can let go of people, situations and thought patterns that are not helpful. You can seek and find people and situations that will support you. You can find satisfaction in life and laughter even though everything will not be perfect and parts of life could remain difficult. Our first session After an initial conversation to help us get to know each other, our work together begins. You share the concerns that brought you to therapy, current life situations, and relevant history. I seek to understand what you are telling me as you begin to develop goals for therapy. You let me know how I could be most helpful to you. We begin to explore avenues to your goals and how to measure the progress you seek. This conversation expands over sessions as you feel more comfortable in therapy and as aspects of your life become clearer to you. At the end of this initial session, you can assess whether we could work well together.

Getting help can be frightening. When suffering feels unclear or confusing, having someone to shed light on what you are going through makes a world of a difference. I have had a career of helping many people in tough moments while providing a safe, healing and empathic environment. I continue my beliefs and commitment to providing this to people dealing with trauma, depression and anxiety. It’s important to have someone in kinship to your journey. Find a renewed sense of comfort, wholeness and understanding to your experience. A relational space which allows open dialogue and collaboration over your life situation will bring about positive change and insight into needs, decisions or ambivalences. Common approaches can help someone cope on a moment-to-moment basis. Meanwhile, layers of your experiences and whether significant relationships have met your needs still necessitate insight and healing.

My practice specializes in treating individuals, couples and families, and through years of experience, I’m confident that no problem is too great to overcome. I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specializing in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, trauma-related disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, insomnia, and other common mental health concerns for patients across the lifespan. Building trusting, collaborative relationships is central to my practice, as I believe the best outcomes come from working together to create treatment plans that align with each person's goals. Patients are encouraged to be active advocates for their own mental health, while also knowing they have a dedicated partner supporting them in achieving recovery, maintaining stability, and improving their overall well-being. Everyone deserves compassionate, evidence-based mental health care personalized to their unique needs and goals. My role is to be a supportive, collaborative partner who will listen without judgment, celebrate your progress, and help you navigate challenges along the way. Whether you're seeking help for the first time, managing an acute concern, or working to maintain the stability you've achieved, we'll create a plan together that fits your life and empowers you to take an active role in your care. I look forward to helping you build resilience, strengthen your confidence, and work toward lasting mental wellness one day at a time, bringing empathy, collaboration, and a whole-person perspective to every visit so you feel supported, understood, and empowered. Mental health care, in my view, is not only about treating symptoms but also about developing the skills and support needed to manage daily stressors, which are a natural part of life. This means helping patients feel prepared and empowered to navigate challenges without letting them become overwhelming or destabilizing. I am passionate about providing comprehensive care that meets people where they are, whether that includes medication management, psychotherapy, or an integrated combination of both to support long-term mental health and well-being. My approach to care spans the full spectrum of psychiatric acuity, from navigating more acute mental health challenges to maintaining stability and preventing relapse after achieving wellness. Understanding each person's unique experiences, goals, and needs comes first, which I achieve by bringing a compassionate, and individualized approach to every relationship. You can expect a kind, supportive, and collaborative environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered as we work together. This approach is also encouraging, offering gentle guidance and honest feedback when needed to support meaningful growth. Lasting change happens through partnership, and you are encouraged to take an active role in your own mental health journey. I understand that making these changes can feel challenging, so my goal is to meet you where you are while helping you build confidence, develop effective coping strategies, and move toward greater stability and independence. Every treatment plan is tailored to your unique needs, experiences, and goals, so it feels both realistic and achievable. I began my career in a hospital-based outpatient clinic, where I worked with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and varying levels of psychiatric acuity, along with six-and-a-half years as a registered nurse in pediatric critical care and pediatric neurology/neurosurgery. Caring for children and supporting families through some of life's most difficult moments showed me how deeply mental and physical health are connected, and how essential accessible, competent, individualized, and compassionate mental health care is to overall well-being. These experiences inspired me to pursue psychiatry and continue caring for people in a different way. Today, I have the privilege of working with patients across the lifespan, and I truly enjoy helping individuals at every stage of life navigate unique challenges. I love cooking, hanging with family and friends, and spending time in the garden. I'm also a devoted New York Rangers hockey fan!

I start with listening and seek to cultivate a perspective that enlivens, enlightens and unburdens. I use an integrative psychoanalytic approach founded in curiosity and collaboration to address problems relating to trauma, depression, anxiety or self-esteem that can undermine ones ability to thrive interpersonally, creatively, sexually or professionally. Whether it's a life-change, a search for meaning, creative blocks, frustration with the quality of relationships or something else, I will meet you there. Through listening and talking, we will explore internal experience and how it impacts relating to oneself and others. Beyond psychoanalysis. I am also a trained attachment-based EMDR therapist, a powerful modality to process trauma when words don't seem to cut it. I may also use CBT & mindfulness training. These approaches can help develop an ability to detect unhelpful thinking styles, a stronger mind to body connection, and an increased awareness in the present. To give you a chance to practice outside our sessions, I encourage meditation and journaling. With a background in anthropology, I have a special interest in how culture shapes each of us, and always consider the impact of your culture in context with the struggles you face.

Hi, I’m Kayla Cunningham! I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been helping people work through life’s challenges and changes. College can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — juggling classes, friendships, family expectations, and figuring out what’s next isn’t always easy. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can talk openly about whatever’s on your mind, without judgment. Whether you’re navigating stress, anxiety, relationships, big transitions, or just feeling stuck, I’m here to meet you where you’re at and help you find tools and strategies that actually fit your life. I believe the relationship we build is one of the most important parts of counseling. I’ll take the time to get to know you, understand what you’re going through, and adjust my approach to what you need — because there’s no one “right” way to do this.

I operate under the assumption that every human wakes up each day and does the best job they know how to do. By creating an environment of safety and unconditional positive regard, my hope is for you to stop just surviving the day-to-day and start living. I believe firmly in the healing experience of coming to therapy and feeling seen, heard, and accepted for exactly who you are. Together we will journey towards authenticity, self-identified goals, and deconstructing painful narratives and patterns, all while firmly maintaining self-compassion. I graduated from St. John Fisher with a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have worked with a vast range of individuals throughout my career, including but not limited to college students, survivors of sexual harassment and abuse, and marginalized identities. I have experience working with addiction, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, adjusting to life transitions, interpersonal violence, guilt and shame, suicidal ideation, and personality disorders. I have formal training in Polyvagal Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. And while I am confident in utilizing these evidence-based interventions in my clinical work, I also firmly believe in the healing power of two individuals holding space together and creating safety, which will be the foundation of every session. Together we can explore who you truly are rather than who the world tells you you should be and push back on the internalized systems that keep us trapped in spirals of shame and pain. It would be an honor to share this journey with you.

Gen Z and Millennial women are often bombarded with difficult life transitions such as adulting, relationship distress, quarter-life crises, career pursuits, parenting, caregiving, and more. This can be a lot to manage! Societal pressures plus the changing roles of women in this age group require a focused, feminist, and knowledgable approach. It can be tricky searching for the right therapist, so I appreciate you being here in the first place. My approach is fine-tuned, using radical genuineness, to help you learn how to manage these unique stressors while maintaining authenticity and calm. I am practiced in several targeted therapies that meet the needs of women in transition including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). In my personal experience, I have come to view change as the only constant, which is why I find great value in being able to help my clients through significant life transitions. Looking back at the clients I've served over the years, I have been able to find something about every one of them that I admire. I love meeting my clients where they are and seeing how I can support their walk through life in a genuine, non-judgmental, and meaningful way. If this sounds like the right approach for you, feel free to reach out for a phone consult.

Starting college or graduate school —or navigating your way through them—can be both exciting and overwhelming. Many students find themselves facing stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, identity questions, academic pressure, or major life transitions, often for the first time. You don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I specialize in working with college students and young adults, and I understand the unique pressures of university life—from managing expectations and finding your place, to coping with self-doubt, loneliness, or burnout. Whether you’re struggling or simply wanting to better understand yourself and grow, therapy can be a space where things begin to feel more manageable and more hopeful. My approach is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe that meaningful change happens in a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship, where you feel safe to be yourself and explore what’s really going on beneath the surface. Together, we’ll work at your pace to better understand your experiences, build resilience, and develop tools that help you move forward with greater confidence and clarity. I have over 15 years of experience in the mental health field, including working in university counseling centers, where I supported students through many of the challenges you may be facing now. I’ve worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities, and I am committed to creating an inclusive, affirming space where you feel seen and respected. I also have experience working with international students, students with disabilities and chronic health conditions, Deaf and hard of hearing students, and those navigating complex family or cultural dynamics. Reaching out for support can feel like a big step—but it can also be the beginning of feeling more like yourself again. You deserve support, understanding, and a space to grow. I would be honored to be part of that process with you.
