Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Therapy is a powerful tool for reflection and change. Whether working with teens or adults, my approach is insightful and exploratory, helping clients uncover unconscious patterns. Sometimes, we become stuck in painful or unsatisfying ways of being and need a safe space to learn, heal, and grow. I commonly work with issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, life transition, and relationships. In our work together, I help clients understand the impact of past experiences on the present, with a focus on the here-and-now. I also incorporate breathing and mindfulness practices to help manage everyday stress.
Reaching out for help can be hard. We will do our best to provide a safe, supportive environment, when you can feel free to share as much as you need to. We consider therapy to be a collaboration between clinician and patient. Our job is to work with you to help you better understand your inner thoughts and feelings so that you can become the best version of you. We tend to follow patterns of behavior based on our earliest identities. Some of us go through life thinking we are not smart enough, not good looking enough, not capable enough, or not as good as others. It's important to understand that these beliefs are not in fact reality, but an internalized sense of self that we have learned from our earliest experiences. Because of these beliefs, we can often find ourselves repeating unhealthy patterns in relationships, how we deal with stress, social isolation, engaging in unhealthy or risky behaviors, and all manner of acting out in self-destructive ways. Therapy can help re-define who you are, so that instead following these unhealthy patterns, you can make choices that are informed by what you really want, as opposed to what you think you deserve. Therapy is not a quick fix. It takes time and commitment, and it is hard. We are ready to make that commitment with you, and be with you on your journey of self-discovery, so that you can become the author of your own life, rather than letting it be written for you. You may be entering a new stage in your life, whether it is heading to college and moving out of your childhood home, starting your career, choosing to seek graduate or advanced training, or becoming serious in a committed relationship and starting your own family. You know what you want to achieve, but need additional support in navigating the stresses of setting off on this new path. Or maybe you want help in redefining the roles your family members and loved ones have in your life as you walk towards adulthood in a chaotic world. Maybe you have started your own family and made the decision to become a parent. You may want to parent differently than your parents, but are unsure how. You might be experiencing anxiety around being responsible for a vulnerable new human being. Children can be mirrors, reflecting our own experiences of childhood back onto us. Perhaps past painful experiences of not having your own needs met in childhood are bubbling up and you want to have a safe space to process and explore those experiences. Making lasting change can be difficult for most, and choosing therapy is the first step on the path towards positive growth and change.
While some clients enter therapy with specific goals and I am more than willing to be of assistance, I pride myself as a culturally competent and community values forward professional with an understanding that each client has a unique system of support and challenges. My experience has been rather eclectic in terms of population I have worked with, I have come to feel connected to adolescents and immigrants who require specific lens of care. As a bilingual therapist able to provide sessions in Mandarin and English, I am eager to be of support for fellow members of the community who struggle to assimilate or navigate in the metropolitan NYC area. I have more than 8 years of experience in outpatient mental health settings, half of which was spent as a case manager specialist and more than four years of experience as a clinician. I have worked closely and successfully with individuals, families, couples and groups across all ages and backgrounds. As an immigrant, queer woman of color, I find myself to be able to compassionately provide a mirroring comfort for clients of all identities but especially those who might share similar identities as me. I have found my clinical approach to blend from Gestalt, person-in-environment approach, and trauma informed lens. Throughout treatment, I also utilize a variety of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) interventions when skills training is in order and my style can be described as motivational but compassionate. My past clients know me well to be able to match their pace, using various analogies and references from books I am reading and humor to get to know them. I graduated from UGA with an undergrad Bachelor of Science from UGA in 2016 with two years of research experience during that time and received my master’s in social work from NYU Silver in 2020 with specialized training in community leadership. During my time as a mental health case manager, I have completed training in Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) motivational interviewing. In my previous clinical position as a LMSW, I received my Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) training certificate in 2021, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills training in 2024, and my Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in 2025.

I work with a variety of people whose active, creative lives have been interrupted by depression, mania, anxiety, mourning, and trauma. Psychotherapy with me is a process of guided expression. Thoughts and feelings, dreams and fantasies, desires and fears are given voice – loud, clear, and without judgment. The experience of formulating authentic verbal and emotional expressions can be transformative in and of itself. Also, as patterns in your way of being become clear, you can begin to consider alternatives, find courage to change, and experience what is commonly known as freedom. I think mental health means developing a Full Self – a progressive version of you that can love hard and work hard, understand complex motivations, and experience feelings, including painful ones, without being overwhelmed. In this process, I draw from extensive, ongoing training in both psychodynamics and cognitive-behavioral work. My training began in 2005 at Bellevue’s Psychiatric Emergency Room and continued at renowned New York City hospitals and institutions. I’ve been in private practice in Brooklyn since 2011. Also, I was an adjunct professor in a clinical Ph.D. program for many years and supervised trainees at two college clinics and psychiatry residents at Mt. Sinai Hospital. My publications are in the areas of loneliness, personality disorders, and art.
As a pre-licensed mental health counselor with three years of experience, I help neurodiverse adolescents and young adults navigate struggles with executive functioning, emotional regulation, life transitions, grief, interpersonal communication, and identity exploration. I love working with patients who are curious about their behaviors and want to learn more about themselves as they navigate their personal mental health journey. My hope is to be an extension of your support system as you move through life’s natural transitions, finding healthier ways to express yourself while offering unconditional positive regard, empathy, and a listening ear. If you feel like this resonates with you, please reach out so we can chat further! When working with younger populations, I integrate play and expressive arts therapies into my sessions. For older populations, I use aspects of Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), allowing patients to have a say in personalizing their space and treatment goals. I take a fluid and ever-changing approach to therapy as I learn new skills and modalities to share, and to better customize care to each person’s unique story and needs. In the first few sessions, we collaboratively set treatment goals and work together to find the most impactful modalities to use. Whether this includes solution-focused activities or meaningful conversations to better process life events, the goal is to give you a space to be authentically yourself with the ability to comfortably share feedback and tailor sessions to better curate your healing journey. I was drawn to the mental health field at a young age through my own struggles to find my voice and better advocate for myself. As a neurodivergent clinician, I empathize with the difficulty in finding a space where individuals feel truly heard and understood. This unique perspective has led me to curating personalized spaces for my patients to make strides toward their treatment goals in a way that feels authentic to them. A huge music enthusiast, I love to attend concerts and musicals on my days off, as well as draw, write, and walk my dog around the neighborhood. I'm also an avid thrifter and am constantly pushing my personal style to new heights!

I believe that physical and emotional safety and connection within a therapeutic relationship can help clients access and heal their relationships with themselves and others. For this reason, I deeply value the relationship I form with clients. I offer support with empathy and curiosity, as you move through old feelings, bring attention to your present experience, and build trust within yourself. My approach is collaborative and trauma-informed, with the goal of reducing feelings of shame and self-judgement. I will reflect and validate your experience, notice what might be happening in the moment, and encourage self-reflection. Trauma can block our ability to heal, and I have deep grounding in approaches that create a holding environment, gently and gradually building safety and trust. I can support you as you increase your capacity to heal, through sharing and corrective experience, so that you can experience more regulation and joy in the present. I work with adults and adolescents. Some of the issues I work with are anxiety, depression, and life transitions, as well as grief and loss. I’m an LGBTQ-affirming clinician and have experience working with issues particular to LGBTQ+ folks. I have extensive training and experience in developmental trauma treatment and attachment-oriented approaches. I have training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic approaches such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I’ve also been a hospice volunteer, and completed trainings in grief counseling and end-of-life doula work. Other areas I’ve trained in are cultural humility, working with shame, treatment strategies for habits and addictions, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and psychedelic therapy for end-of-life anxiety and palliative care. I graduated with a BA in English from Barnard College, an MS.Ed. in Infant and Family Development and Early Intervention/Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College, and an MS.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from CUNY Hunter College. I have over 15 years’ experience as a trauma-informed, early childhood special educator and mental health consultant. It would be an honor to connect with and bear witness to your process.
Hi! We are a therapy practice providing individual therapy, couples counseling, group therapy, and psychedelic integration. We offer in-person therapy sessions in our Williamsburg, Brooklyn offices, as well as online therapy sessions throughout New York state. We are an excellent match for people who subscribe to non-traditional lifestyles and we specialize in working with the LGBTQ+ community. Our staff is expertly trained, multilingual, and diverse in experience and background. However you identify, we strive to truly know you as an individual - your values, beliefs, and outlook on life - while also maintaining an appreciation for overarching human needs, such as the desire for connection with others and the longing to feel understood. We offer therapy that is tailored toward your specific needs and rests on an affirming, humanistic, and trauma-informed stance. We are trained in a range of modalities, including psychodynamic, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), internal family systems (IFS), narrative therapy, and somatic work. We will help you build insight into why you are feeling distress, so that you can use this insight to make positive changes to improve your life and start feeling better. While working to deepen insight, we concurrently help you process any difficult emotions that arise. Depending on your needs and requests, we may integrate therapy skills and tools, mindfulness exercises, or movement and art in our work together. We consider therapy to be a co-created process and attend to your mind, heart, body, and spirit to help you heal.
I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including trauma, eating disorders, OCD, relationship struggles, and academic stress. I am attuned to the role oppression plays in my patients' lives and am LGBTQIA+ affirming. I enjoy working with students, artists and people with creative practices, those undergoing life transitions, and people seeking to understand intergenerational sources of suffering. My style is warm and nonjudgmental. I am guided by the belief that each person contains inherent strengths and knowledge, and that a primary goal of treatment is to allow for the expression of this unique experience. In our work together, we will move between past and present to understand what it’s like to be you. We will look carefully at your struggles, as well as how you love and dream. This diligent attention to your experience can result in satisfying and often surprising changes in personal, creative, and professional endeavors. In time, this knowledge of the self may also reduce symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and physical pain. I am a New York State licensed master social worker and graduated with honors from Silberman School of Social Work. I am a candidate in adult psychoanalysis at the Contemporary Freudian Society. I have also been trained in the treatment of eating disorders. I have worked with people of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexuality, and class backgrounds. My intention is that our sessions allow you to feel deeply known, and that through our work you’ll feel more free to be authentic in your life and relationships. Together, we’ll get to know you — your patterns, your strengths, your desires — so you become your own best teacher, with me as a steady support along the way. I hold a Master’s of Social Work from Smith College. I’ve worked with individuals of diverse ages, identities, and backgrounds in community mental health in New York City and in educational settings including San Francisco International High School and Vassar College. I trained in post-abortion counseling with Exhale Pro Voice, and I participated in FemSex, now called GenSex, an anti-oppression workshop for people of all identities about sexuality, gender, consent, and privilege. Before returning to school to train as a therapist, I worked for several years in international women’s rights, food justice, and bilingual education. I draw from psychodynamic, relational, somatic, mindfulness, and compassion-based approaches. If you’re struggling with anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, or questions of meaning and purpose, let’s talk.
College and early adulthood come with a lot of messy, in-between moments — anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, identity questions, and transitions nobody fully prepares you for. I'm David, and this is exactly the stuff I work with. My background is a little different: I hold degrees in both Neuroscience and Social Work, which means I bring both brain-based science and genuine human warmth to every session. I use IFS, mindfulness, and somatic work to help you understand your patterns — and I'm equally comfortable with harm reduction or a focus on full abstinence, depending on what's right for you. Expect some humor and creativity along the way too. No judgment, no scripts. Just a real conversation. Reach out whenever you're ready. *Insurance & Fees* I am in-network with Aetna, Cigna, and Northwell Direct in NY only, and out of network with all other major insurance companies in NY and FL. My office provides a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement and we will assist you in verifying your benefits to ensure the process is seamless. I also offer a sliding scale rate for those in need. Please reach out to learn more about how we can make therapy work for you.

Finding the right therapist matters, and starting therapy can feel vulnerable. I aim to create a warm, supportive space where you feel understood, respected, and empowered. My goal is for therapy to be both practical and reflective—a place for insight, growth, and genuine change. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist working with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotion dysregulation, increased stress, and life transitions. I work with individuals at different stages of life, including adults, adolescents, and children, and I also support parents as they navigate their own challenges and transitions. My approach to therapy is collaborative, flexible, and grounded in evidence-based practices, including CBT and DBT. I believe therapy should move at a pace that honors where you are and what you’re ready for. Together, we’ll explore how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors connect, and work toward changes that feel both meaningful and sustainable. My background: I earned my doctorate degree (PsyD) in Combined School and Clinical Psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University. My professional experiences include work in community mental health, college counseling, and private practice settings, where I’ve provided evidence-based treatment to individuals across the lifespan.
