Therapists for college students near Duke University
College can be exciting, overwhelming, and everything in between—and you don’t have to figure it all out alone. As someone who’s been through the college journey myself, I understand the pressure to succeed, the weight of family expectations, and the struggle to balance mental health with everything else life throws at you. I’m here to support students who are feeling stuck, anxious, burnt out, or unsure of who they are or where they’re headed. With a background in health systems, early childhood development, and clinical training across diverse settings, I offer a space where you can be yourself—no judgment, no pressure. Whether you're processing past experiences, adjusting to a new environment, or just need someone to talk to, I’ll meet you with empathy, tools that work, and a deep respect for your lived experience. Let’s make space for you.
You are doing the most! If it feels like there is no good news right now, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe you feel like you're tired of talking about what is bothering you and you want to start feeling better. Therapy is a safe place where you can talk about your feelings. This is a judgment-free zone and welcomes all who wish to expand their sense of self. My role is to connect with you so that you can experience your thoughts and feelings in a way that is different from how you do it at home or with your friends. I look forward to meeting you and listening to everything you have to say.
You're both reflective, and self-critical, constantly trying to prove yourself. The strive for perfection, and loud inner critic leave you feeling exhausted both physically and emotionally. You want to feel better, but don't know where to begin... Whether you're navigating anxiety, processing trauma, or you’re exploring your relationship with food and/or your body, I want you to know things can get better. My work focuses on empowering college aged and younger adult women as they begin to connect with who they are, clarify what is important to them, and cultivate a life where they feel fulfilled, connected, and energized. My approach is warm, relational, trauma informed, and direct. I use humor when appropriate, and encourage my clients to show up authentically. I integrate somatic (body) based interventions like gentle movement, breathwork, and ifs-parts work with cognitive approaches to help you better identify, understand, and work through your thoughts and feelings. My passion is helping women explore and improve their relationships with food, their bodies, and ultimately, themselves. Together we can explore the deep rooted narratives you hold, and work on building a new story that feels both empowering and tangible. I strongly believe we heal through safe connection, so if you're ready and willing, let's connect!
Are you an adult struggling to navigate day-to-day life? Are symptoms getting in the way of you fulfilling obligations, or just enjoying yourself? Are you often bothered by feelings of emotional overwhelm? Is it hard to calm down? I welcome people who are neurodivergent, neurotypical, apart of the LGBT+ community, processing grief, having issues in relationships, and more. I use a combination of therapeutic approaches grounded in mindfulness to help you break out of unhelpful cycles and symptoms. I will partner with you to change stress reactions that are getting in the way of your daily life. I am compassionate, non-judgmental, and direct. I will use evidence-based techniques to support you in building coping skills. You don’t have to keep struggling on your own. I love supporting positive changes! Therapy can be a powerful step toward relief and clarity, even if reaching out feels hard. If you’re ready for support, understanding, and real change, I invite you to contact me. Together, we can begin building a path toward feeling more grounded and in control.

You deserve to live a life that makes you feel excited to wake up every morning. It's time to tell anxiety, stress, angst, fear, self-doubt, and low self-esteem that it's time to kick rocks. If you are riddled with anxiety due to biological or environmental causes, or if you have experienced significant traumatic events, I am here to help you. The stress of the past plus the fast paced nature of today's society makes navigating issues relating to your family, job, school, health, etc. completely overwhelming. This does not have to be the case. It's time to let go of the grip that emotional and psychological pain has on you. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of North Carolina with 6+ years experience as a mental health therapist and 10+ years experience working in the mental health field. When you're struggling with an eating disorder, anxiety, or depression, the idea of opening up and trusting another person can be HARD. I know that you've likely heard so many messages throughout your life about what you should do and who you should be, but I don't think that "shoulds" have a place in therapy. Who do you WANT to be? How do you WANT to feel? That is way more important than any shoulds, and I would be honored to walk alongside you as you start to find answers to these questions over time. Together, we can unravel those expectations - what you've been told it means to be healthy or successful or fill in the blank - and get to the heart of what really matters to you and what you need. Being a human is messy, and as your therapist, I'll be right there in that space with you as a human first, therapist second. Let's explore what it means to be humans in a world that expects perfection (which doesn't exist!) and pushes you to grind until you're too burned out to do the things you actually want to do. Whether you realize it today or not, you deserve peace. I have many tools in my toolbox to support you, but to me the most important thing I can do is to provide you a safe space to explore your experience in its entirety at your own pace - to build a connection that is strong enough for you to know that I won't judge you or make you bad or wrong for how you are feeling or for using certain behaviors to cope. It's what you've known to do up to this point, so let's put our heads together and find the ways that this has made sense so we can look at it from a place of compassion instead of judgment. This is a shame-free space! I hold a special place in my heart for those who are working towards eating disorder recovery who feel like they aren't sick enough because their body size, race, sexuality, or gender identity don't match what they are seeing on social media under the eating disorder hashtags. All identities are welcome here, and no matter what your circumstances, your concerns are valid, you ARE sick enough, and you deserve compassionate, equitable care. If anything I've said here makes you think "I like her vibe," please don't hesitate to reach out. I would love to chat further about what it would look like for us to work together.

Welcome! I'm Shannon. I'm glad you're here, and acknowledge that connecting with a therapist is no easy step. Thank you for having the courage to contemplate connecting. For me, who you are - right now, in this moment - matters, is important, and is enough. Your voice matters; your story is important and set-apart; I wholeheartedly believe you are doing the best you can with what you have; and, I know you want to be the best possible version of You. I also know that change is hard. Taking steps towards one's best self often means looking into the corners of our lives; saying things aloud we've spent years only saying to ourselves; and, being willing to adjust our story from one filled with "if onlys" and "should'ves", to one of acceptance for our enough-ness then, and now. Change - it's not easy and can be uncomfortable, so it's my job to deeply listen; to affirm your experience; and, to create a space filled with reverence, safety, humility, loving-kindness, gentle challenge, and gratitude for your willingness to explore together. I will listen, if you are ready to share.
I approach the therapeutic process with the belief that therapy is simply a human helping a human. By offering an objective and judgement free setting, my hope is to provide a space that offers freedom to share and feel without hesitation. I am a masters-level clinician; I earned a master of science degree in counseling and psychology from Troy University in 2016. I'm a client centered counselor with a passion to help empower individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and tools to work through their presenting problems. I aim to build a therapeutic alliance with my clients and create a safe, judgment-free atmosphere with the hope that they are able to openly explore their thoughts and feelings. I believe in the power of knowledge and it's ability to impact healing and frequently apply psychoeducation into treatment. I'm a strength-based therapist and my overall theoretical orientation is integrative; it commonly includes utilization of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as behavioral and solution-focused techniques. I enjoy working with individuals who suffer from anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, relationship issues, and various life challenges. I'm happy to currently serve individuals 18+. I'm licensed in NC and SC. I'm also an out-of-state provider for the state of Florida allowing the option for telehealth for clients located in Florida at the time of service.
